The most commonly offered monitors are the African Nile Monitor (Varanus niloticus), which grows up to 7 feet; the Savannah Monitor (Varanus exanthematicus), measuring 3 to 5 feet at maturity and the Asian Water Monitor (Varanus salvator), which grows to a maximum of 8 feet! If you want calmness and docility in a monitor, then your best choice is the Savannah Monitor, which becomes very placid with frequent handling.
All monitors except Gray’s Monitors are carnivores, and it is not hard to meet their nutritional requirements. In addition to insects and other invertebrates, monitors can eat had-boiled eggs, canned dog and cat foods, fish and small rodents. Diet should be as varied as possible and vitamin and mineral supplements used, especially if you’re feeding processed foods devoid of bone and organ meats, from which they normally get nutrients and minerals in the wild.
Monitors require sizable living quarters and enclosures should be at least twice as long as their ultimate or maximum size, and about half again as wide. They require temperatures in the 85 degrees to 90 degrees F range during the day, although some species like it slightly hotter. To help match their natural day/night cycles, temperatures at night should be allowed to drop to 70 degrees F.
