A clear luster, but some genera, notably Trachydosaurus and Tribolonotus, have rough or keeled scales. Many forms lack limbs or possess but one pair; there may be five or fewer fingers.
Probably the most problematic genus has been Lygosoma, practically world-wide in distribution and having all stages of limb development. The genus Eumeces is common in the United States and includes the golden Great Plains skink, E. obsoleta, a foot-long lizard of the central states. Trachydosaurus rugosus looks like an animated pair of pinecones, having large scales and a tail resembling the head. The family giant is Corucia zebrata, a two-foot long tree dweller of the Solomon Islands.
The skinks are active, often nervous lizards. They hide under large boulders or in other inaccessible spots but sometimes take to hilly woodsides. They are mainly insectivorous but many also eat plants.

Ophisaurus Ventralis, the common glass lizard of the eastern United States, is often bright green in color. There are many limbless forms in this family, including Anguis and Ophisaurus. Ophiodes is a New World limbless form, while the Caribbean Wetmorena has very small, thin limbs.
The alligator lizards, genus Gerrhonotus, have prehensile tails to facilitate climbing. These lizards make excellent pets and can be induced to stand on their hind legs and “beg” as a pet dog would. The galliwasps of the genus Diploglossus may be nearly two feet long. These stocky, skink-like lizards are nearly identical to the smaller Wetmorena, but while the former is pentadactyl, the latter is tetradactyl. The diminutive Sauresia sepsoides is another closely allied form.
The glass “snakes” of the Ophisaurus group have the widest distribution. There are four of five varieties in the United States, one in Europe and Russia, and one in China. The little Ophiodes are similar but have flap-like hind limbs; as these are essentially useless, I refer to the genus above as “limbless.”

The road then levels out onto a granite plateau with numerous exfoliations. There we stopped to have a look around and uncovered a number of reptiles. The first was a legless lizards, the excitable delma (Delma tincta) found beneath an exfoliation. Delmas are widely distributed over most of Australia, with this particular species inhabiting the tropical north. The marking on the delma’s hear are very similar to the markings on juvenile brown snakes (genus Psuedonaja), which this species is believed to mimic. Another habit of the excitable delma, from which its common name stems, is the lizard’s tendency to jump or flick itself into the air when distraught. This may also be a part of its mimicry, imitating the strike of a snake.

There are approximately a thousand different species of skink worldwide – throughout North, Central and South America and in Africa, Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, Indo-Malaysia and the Australian archipelago, as well as on many oceanic islands throughout the world. They are a highly successful and diversified group of lizards. They occupy every conceivable habitat and climate, including near salt water and fresh water; they are even found as high as the tree line of the Himalayan mountains. They are primarily ground dwellers and burrowers, although some are at least semiarboreal and a few are semiaquatic as well. Most ground-dwelling or terrestrial skinks are semifossorial. They range in size from 1 inch to as long as 15 inches or more in body length, longer if you count the tail. They are noted for their flat, shiny scales and cylindrical bodies.
One of the largest and most popular skinks kept as pets is the Blue-tongued Skink (Tilaquia sp.), some species of which are heavy bodied and measure 1 1/2 feet or more in length when fully grown, including their tail.

The “wet and dry tropical climate” is sometimes referred to as a Savannah or Savanna climate due to the naturally occurring “Savannah grasses” that are common throughout these regions. Savannah climates occur mainly between 20 degrees North and South latitudes.
Mean annual temperature for this type of climate is at least 60 degrees F. ( 21 degrees Celsius). Savannah climates lack a winter, but distinct seasons are determined by temperature and temperatures and amounts of precipitation.. The “cool/dry” season produces daytime temperatures of 80 degrees to 90 degrees Fahrenheit ( 27 to 32 degrees Celsius) while nighttime lows of 70 to slightly less than 60 degrees F ( 21 to 15 degrees Celsius) are common. Relative humidity during this season is slower than that of the the “wet season” that precedes it. The “cool / dry season” eventually gives way to the ” hot / dry season ” which brings temperatures of 90 to over 100 degrees F ( 32 to 38 degrees C) for daytime highs. The ” hot / dry season” ends as the “wet season” gets under way. “Wet season” temperatures and humidity factors can be compared to those of tropical rain forest climate Savannah climate is 40 to 60 inches ( 102 to 152 cm)

It is a serious misconception that adult Iganuas can thrive and live well and healthy on a diet of lettuce , tomatoes and mealworms. To ensure that the Iganuas appetite remains vibrant and sparked , it is important that the lizard’s menu be diversified overall if not day to day and on an ongoing basis. Easily , the largestlizard family in numbers , species and range, skinks occur almost everywhere a lizard can live or reside , except in the sea. Skinks are most unique among lizards in having a “secondary palate”. Osteoderms are present. Frontal bones distinct except in the Feylininae , this subfamily ( often considered and actual full family in itself and is lineage). also lacks the jugal bone and is vivaparous or oviparous. Skinks have moveable eyelids , except for Ablepharis, which has an actual clear “spectacle”. In addition the lizards formerly classified as the full family , Feyliniidae are now often included in the Scinidae by many most prominent herptologists; this group includes forms lacking both functional power and eyelids. Ear openings are usually present as is the power of “autonomy”.
Scales are usually smooth with a clear luster. However some genera noteably Trachydosaurus and Tribolonotus have rough or kneeled scaled. Many forms lack limbs or possess but one solitary pair, there may be five or fewer fingers.

A tropical rain forest climate is also known as a “wet tropical climate””. This implies that the area tends to receive large amounts of rainfall. Many regions of tropical rainforest lack a dry season or at most only two months of the year are dry. Average annual precipitation is 70 to over 100 inches ( 180 – 250 cm). Temperatures remain consistently high and there is no winter season. The mean annual temperature is 77 to 81 degrees F. ( 25 to 27 degrees) . Daytime high temperatures range from 95 degrees F ( 30 degrees celsius) to the low 90’s ( 32 to 34 degrees Celsius)
The highest temperature measured at Santarem , Brazil along the Amazon River in the Amazon Basin of South America was 85 degrees farenheit; this is just slightly below the usual tropical forest nightime low of 68 – 75 degrees farenheight ( 20 to 24 degrees celsius). Average humidity can be estimated at approximately 85 % and above. Tropical rainforest climates are located primarily within a range of 10 degrees lattitudes poleward in both directions of the equator.
Regions of the world that are influenced by the presence of a tropical rainforest climate include: most of the eastern half of Central America , part of the Northwestern coastline of South America from 15 degrees S latitude to 10 degrees North ( this includes the Amazon Basin ) , the Congo Basin of Africa, a small section on the eastern coast of Africa, eastern Madagascar , all of Malaya , almost all of the Indonesian islands including Sumatra; New guinea, the eastern Philippines, and parts of Southwest Asia.

The list of examples is a long one indeed, but what of function ? It is well known that the throat fans of some lizards warn intruders infringing on a territory , as well as to attract mates. The horns of male chameleons are used in territorial battles. The devices of many lizards are for protection, either for protections , either by physical discomfort ( the horns of Phyrnosoma) or bluff (Chlamydosarus) . The dorsal sails of lizards like Hydsosaurus and Basilliscus are not fully explained . One idea is that he device is rich in blood vessels and helps to regulate the internal temperature.
