The Gila Monster

The name beaded lizard is a good one, for the non-overlapping scales resemble Indian bead work. The eyes are small and lidded; the ear is externally visible. The tongue is dark and frequently flicked like that of a snake.

The cheek area of these species will appear swollen, as it is here that the poison glands lie. Unlike snakes, the injection mechanism is located in the lower jaw. The poison flows into the lizard’s mouth and seeps into the wound caused by the long teeth. Although the teeth are grooved, they do not effectively conduct the venom flow. Because the actual injection of venom is uncertain, the lizard must hold on to the victim to increase the possibility of injection, instead of simply striking like most poisonous snakes.

While these lizards are generally believed to be slow and lethargic, a Heloderma can turn quite rapidly and secure a good hold on anyone foolish enough to disturb one.

Tick Prevention for your Iguana

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

The powder with a warm bath and several rinses and clean the cage thoroughly before reintroducing the specimen.

These two insect killers should be available through your pet dealer or veterinarian. A mixture of half-and-half castor oil and 90% grain alcohol brushed on the affected areas may also eliminate mites. Don’t dip your pet in this mixture; just apply a little locally. Note that 90% grain alcohol is not 90 proof. You can buy 90% grain neutral spirits in your pharmacy or liquor store. A little goes a long way.

If you pick off ticks and chiggers with the tweezers, you might well follow up with an alcohol swab to help reduce the risk of infection at the sore spot. Perhaps a pretreatment with the alcohol will tend to loosen the tick before you attempt to pick it off. This passage is not intended to scare anyone from keeping an iguana. People have had dogs and cats with chiggers, ticks, mites and fleas for all of the recorded history.

A number of large and small ticks attached under the edges of the scales of a rainbow boa. The ticks found on iguanas are usually similar in appearance to those found on snakes – ticks are not too choosy.

Skin

Monday, January 26th, 2009

The epidermal coat of lizards is a scaly layer, the scales more than usually overlapping.  Because the animals are “pokilothermic” and because they do need not be kept moist, the skin is remarkably devoid of glands.  In some species they may be a most fine coat of bead like bony pieces just beneath the skin organ.  These are called osteoderms.  They may well be fused to the bones of the head. making the skin immovable.

The scales themselves may be smooth or “kneeled”.  If they are smooth they will feel like smooth  fine leather and even appear to be in  state of almost being polished.  If they are “keeled” , they indeed may be rough or spiny depending on the species themselves and the specifics of that species.

Reptiles

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

A proper reptile to begin with is a vertebrate animal.  It has scales , breathes air , not water, characteristically lays shelled eggs an depends on outside sources for its heat and warmth.   There are in the world and on the globe only five main animals that fit into this group and grouping.   They are in sequence – turtles , lizards , the snakes  the crocodillians and the most strange and odd including a strange little creature called the tuatara , which somehow looks remarkably like a lizard but is not.  Indeed tuatara , a native creature of New Zealand is in grave danger of becoming extinct.

In this latest range of geologic history. there are approximately 6,000 species of reptiles scattered around the earth.  Though reptiles are most diverse as well as numerous in warmer climes and regions . they range as far northward as well turning up as far north as Sweden, Siberia as well as other colder climates that you would think would not harbor and sustain these creatures.  Reptiles as well inhabit desert areas of the planet.
