Still another iguana killer is respiratory disease. Generally it is found in run-down specimens. Buy a healthy animal and take good care of it and avoid this problem. If you are the owner of a thin-tailed, grey, wet-eyed or sunken-eyed snuffler who doesn’t eat or distend his dewlap of otherwise show an enthusiasm for life, you might try several cures simultaneously:
- Try a penicillin-type drug administered by your veterinarian
- Provide sunlight, preferably direct and unfiltered by glass.
- Coax food – try variety
- Avoid handling and stressing the animal
- Keep temperature up – say 82 F to 90 F. Both day and night during the treatment.
- Keep cage dry and clean. Clean means antiseptically clean. Wash the cage with a carbolic acid preparation like Lysol and then thoroughly rinse and dry it to assure that no chemical remains before placing the animal back in his quarters.
- Avoid wooden cages and cages with complicated construction where parasites and germs can hide and avoid detection and disinfection.
It should be noted that some iguana parasites pass through complicated life cycles and during one stage may leave a reptile and find a bird or mammal host, possibly even a human. The important thing to remember is that the parasites like chiggers, ticks and mites sometimes carry within their systems such diseases as “Q” fever. When a mite carrying “Q” fever infests an iguana becomes a stepping stone for the disease to be transmitted further.
The control is simple. Free your iguana from ticks, chiggers and mites. Keep the iguana isolated from other animals which might transfer new infestations. Keep the cage clean. Sterilize it if necessary. Keep the cage simple so that parasites do not have a place to hide while you are eliminating the individuals clinging to your pet. Once freed of parasites your new acquisition need never be infested again.

The origin of the turtle’s shell has not been convincingly explained to any length or depth. A small reptile now named Eunotosaurus that lived approximately 250 million years ago in the “Permian” age has often been stated and referred to as a probable turtle or turtle based ancestor. It had ribs which were broadened in such a way that suggests it played the role of a rudimentary “shell”. But whatever the beginnings of turtles may have been – then the shell itself is now the mark of the turtle clan.
In spite of the millions of years of evolution that have seen turtles established nearly everywhere on the earth except for the air , with “flying turtles”. the shell itself has been retained and is the most recognizable form and indeed trademark of this group and grouping of type of animals.

The juvenile Iganua is mainly insectivorous. It’s diet in captivity consists mainly of insects such as mealworms, earthworms and crickets , although vegetables and fruit are often accepted and included. Although the adult Iganua is for the most part mainly and fundamentally a herbevoire, it sometimes accepts fish as well as poultry – including chicken and turkey bird meat. Overall in most cases insects are rarely consumed by adult iganuas.

It is a serious misconception that adult Iganuas can thrive and live well and healthy on a diet of lettuce , tomatoes and mealworms. To ensure that the Iganuas appetite remains vibrant and sparked , it is important that the lizard’s menu be diversified overall if not day to day and on an ongoing basis. It has been observed and noted by many authorities that Iganaus have been known to prefer the following foods : green , yellow, kidney and baked beans , collard greens , grated carrots , cabbage , and apples , bannanas and grated mealworms ( for juvenile Iguana).

All reptiles practice internal fertilization . In all modern forms , except for the tautara , the male has an organ turned outside in , in the base and basal areas of the tail area , and everted through the opening of the cloaca during erection. In the tautara the and this transfer of sperm is accomplished by bringing the genital openings into contact as in birds and avian creatures. Perhaps this is a left over vestigial remnant of dinosaur harbingers. This of course was probably the means and mechanism as the method used by ancestral reptiles - it is most clear in any case and cases , that the penis and penises had separate origins in turtles, crocodiles and mammals , on the one hand , and in most lizards and snakes on the other side.
Thus , male lizards as well as snakes , not just one , but indeed a full pair and pairing of what are essentially hollow structures called or referred to as “hemipenes” , which make up what are in effect “copulatory” organs . Located as amazingly they are , in the tail areas , behind the opening of the cloaca , these hemipenes often give the tail of the male reptiles , a thicker more gradually contoured tail than that of the females . In many species the sex of the reptile can be distinguished by this difference – which is sometimes rather slight in some.
A “groove” serves as the channel for the sperm . This groove extends from the opening of the sperm duct extends from the opening of the sperm duct along the inner wall ( which of course serves as the outer wall during the erection period / periods), of the hemipenis, and the surface may be pleated or set with actual spines which keep it in place in the oviduct of the female during mating. Either one of the hemipenes may be used , but only one and only one. The hemipene nearest to the female is everted and protruded from the cloaca during the erectile period . This is brought into effect by both a combination and combinations of muscular action and muscular actions and distension of the very walls with blood and blood fluids.

A proper reptile to begin with is a vertebrate animal. It has scales , breathes air , not water, characteristically lays shelled eggs an depends on outside sources for its heat and warmth. There are in the world and on the globe only five main animals that fit into this group and grouping. They are in sequence – turtles , lizards , the snakes the crocodillians and the most strange and odd including a strange little creature called the tuatara , which somehow looks remarkably like a lizard but is not. Indeed tuatara , a native creature of New Zealand is in grave danger of becoming extinct.
In this latest range of geologic history. there are approximately 6,000 species of reptiles scattered around the earth. Though reptiles are most diverse as well as numerous in warmer climes and regions . they range as far northward as well turning up as far north as Sweden, Siberia as well as other colder climates that you would think would not harbor and sustain these creatures. Reptiles as well inhabit desert areas of the planet.
