The protection which the shelled egg gives to the developing embryo is its most obvious contribution to the survival of the species – but scarcely less important is the fact that when it hatches, it lets out into the world a tiny a tiny miniature of an adult, equipped from the beginning to make its own way in its environment. But to reach this perfected state the embryo needs a long period of development in the egg. Turtles like the snappers at left need two to three months; the primitive but specialized New Zealand tuatara needs more than a year. During these long incubations the eggs must be protected from predators and other dangers.

One of the most satisfactory ways of heating insects in the undergrowth for the remaining part of the summer and early autumn, usually confining their activities to the nighttime or dusk and dawn. During the day both adults and newly metamorphosed young will hide in some safe cavity, perhaps under or within rotten fallen timber, under rocks, or in the leaf litter. The adults lose their breeding dress during the terrestrial stage, the male losing his crest and dorsal pattern, becoming plain black above but retaining the bright orange and black belly.
Many species of newts and salamanders possess bright colors that act as a warning to predators that they are poisonous or distasteful.

The rough-necked monitor of Borneo, Varanus Rudicollis, is easily recognized by the extremely thin snout, long nostril, and enlarged heeled nuchal scales.
Temporal arch is present. Osteoderms are greatly reduced or absent. Scalation is uniformly small and granular. The tail may be spiny or long and whip-like. The family consists of one genus, with nearly 60 varieties, found in Africa (except Madagascar), Asia, and Australia.
These lizards are active predators. They can run, swim, and climb well; many are excellent burrowers. When frightened in the open, they aim at clambering up the nearest vertical object, herpetologists not excepted! These animals are strictly carnivorous and strictly oviparous.

Though limbless, lethargic and small-brained, the snake is one of the most perfectly efficient predators in the animal world. Elstic jaw points let it accommodate any prey of reasonable size. A slim body lets it prowl or lie in ambush inconspicuously. A slow metabolism enables it to wait weeks for the right meal. If food walks by that might put up a dangerous fight, a snake can usually afford to ignore it.
Once a snake does attack, its problem is to find an end where it can start swallowing. If its victim is slender, like the lizard opposite, the snake can simply throw its open mouth directly over the creature’s head. But if the victim is wriggly and fat, like the rat above, the snake has to immobilize it first, by wrapping coils around it boa-fashion, or – if the snake is poisonous – by giving it a quieting shot of venom.

It is reasonably safe to assume that a male and female of similar size can be kept as a pair without incident. The females of the species appear to be more passive, which suggests that two or more females might feasibly be housed safely within the same residence. Collectively housing as many as a dozen hatch-lings harmoniously is possible.

The best setting to be in is to be positioned behind the iguana’s dewlap. Care should be taken to avoid damaging the bony structure inside the dewlap.
