Choosing a Pet Lizard

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Hobbyists have established elaborate warmed fan systems that cause a gentle breeze to waft through their enclosures. And if the above special needs aren’t enough, many wild-caught imports come loaded with parasites and need to be expertly and carefully diagnosed and treated by a knowledgeable veterinarian. Although some parasites are kept in check in the wild by the animal’s immune system, the stresses associated with captivity may suppress immune function and then such parasites can become a real problem.

In addition to the Hawaiian Yellow Crested Jackson’s Chameleon, hobbyists also have had some luck with the large Panther Chameleon (Chamaeleo pardalis), and either of these is recommended as a starter species for novice chameleon keepers. Regardless of which chameleon species you decide on, always opt for captive-born chameleons and buy them from a knowledgeable source that can provide continuing advice and counseling on problems that arise.

Reptilia

Plasmodium (Family Plasmodiidae Mesnil) has so far only been seen in lizards. Plasmodium minasense Carini and Rudolph from Mabuia agilis Radday, and Goniocephalus borneensis Schlegel (Laird, 1960) may serve as examples. Plasmodium vastator Laird has been in the flying lizard Draco volans Gray. The intermediate hosts of these parasites are as yet unknown.

Reichenow (1953) and Laird (1960) mention the further species of Plasmodium as occurring in reptilians:

Plasmodium agamae Wenyon in Agama agama L.;

P. diploglossi Arago and Neiva in Diploglossus fasciatus (Gray);

P. cnemidophori Carini in Cnemidophorus lemniscatus D;

P. mabuiae Wenyon in Mabuia quinquetaeniata Sternfield;

Historic Gaboon Bite

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

The October 2006 all-venomous issue was awesome. I immediately read the gaboon viper article. Good stuff. Not many people know that the late Marlin Perkins was bitten by a gaboon viper in 1928 (according to Reptile Life, vol.1, issue 6). Only one fang penetrated his index finger. At the time, there wasn’t any gaboon viper antivenom in existence. He received four doses of antivenom: two rattlesnake, one cobra and one fer-de-lance. He experienced hemotoxic and neurotoxic symptoms: pain, difficulty breathing, extreme swelling of his arm, bloody urine and loss of consciousness. Mr.Perkins almost died, but pulled through and stayed hospitalized about 25 days.

At the time he was the curator of the St. Louis Zoo’s reptile house and was treating the snake that bit him for parasites. As curator, he surely had a lot of experience and respect for his charges, and he still got bit.

Care of Iguanas

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Still another iguana killer is respiratory disease. Generally it is found in run-down specimens. Buy a healthy animal and take good care of it and avoid this problem. If you are the owner of a thin-tailed, grey, wet-eyed or sunken-eyed snuffler who doesn’t eat or distend his dewlap of otherwise show an enthusiasm for life, you might try several cures simultaneously:

  • Try a penicillin-type drug administered by your veterinarian
  • Provide sunlight, preferably direct and unfiltered by glass.
  • Coax food – try variety
  • Avoid handling and stressing the animal
  • Keep temperature up – say 82 F to 90 F. Both day and night during the treatment.
  • Keep cage dry and clean. Clean means antiseptically clean. Wash the cage with a carbolic acid preparation like Lysol and then thoroughly rinse and dry it to assure that no chemical remains before placing the animal back in his quarters.
  • Avoid wooden cages and cages with complicated construction where parasites and germs can hide and avoid detection and disinfection.

It should be noted that some iguana parasites pass through complicated life cycles and during one stage may leave a reptile and find a bird or mammal host, possibly even a human. The important thing to remember is that the parasites like chiggers, ticks and mites sometimes carry within their systems such diseases as “Q” fever. When a mite carrying “Q” fever infests an iguana becomes a stepping stone for the disease to be transmitted further.

The control is simple. Free your iguana from ticks, chiggers and mites. Keep the iguana isolated from other animals which might transfer new infestations. Keep the cage clean. Sterilize it if necessary. Keep the cage simple so that parasites do not have a place to hide while you are eliminating the individuals clinging to your pet. Once freed of parasites your new acquisition need never be infested again.
