Subtropical Climate

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

A subtropical climate is, as the name implies, somewhat less than tropical. Although winters in these zones are much milder than those of temperate regions, frost is a possibility and extreme low temperatures can occasionally drop to —5°F(—21°C). Normally, winter day temperatures average from 55 to 60°F (13—16°C), while night temperatures average from 35 to 45°F (2—8°C).

Summer months usually average from 75 to 80°F’ (24— 27°C) during the day, and nighttime lows are ordinarily in the high 50s to the low 70s F (15—22°C). Extreme daytime highs can reach 110°F (43°C). Average summer humidity is approximately 70% to 80%. Average annual precipitation is 30 to 65 inches (76—165 cm).

Almost all of the southeastern United States below the border of Virginia and North Carolina is encompassed by a subtropical climate. This subtropical zone, like the temperate zone of the United States, reaches west to approximately 100°W longitude (extreme southern Florida is excluded from this climatic zone). Most of the West Coast of the United States has a subtropical climate, and much of southern Europe is subject to a subtropical clime that is prove to be the ideal temperatures for most temperate and subtropical species.

Tropical Savanna Climate

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The “wet and dry tropical climate” is sometimes referred to as a Savannah or Savanna climate due to the naturally occurring “Savannah grasses” that are common throughout these regions. Savannah climates occur mainly between 20 degrees North and South latitudes.

Mean annual temperature for this type of climate is at least 60 degrees F. ( 21 degrees Celsius). Savannah climates lack a winter, but distinct seasons are determined by temperature and temperatures and amounts of precipitation.. The “cool/dry” season produces daytime temperatures of 80 degrees to 90 degrees Fahrenheit ( 27 to 32 degrees Celsius) while nighttime lows of 70 to slightly less than 60 degrees F ( 21 to 15 degrees Celsius) are common. Relative humidity during this season is slower than that of the the “wet season” that precedes it. The “cool / dry season” eventually gives way to the ” hot / dry season ” which brings temperatures of 90 to over 100 degrees F ( 32 to 38 degrees C) for daytime highs. The ” hot / dry season” ends as the “wet season” gets under way. “Wet season” temperatures and humidity factors can be compared to those of tropical rain forest climate Savannah climate is 40 to 60 inches ( 102 to 152 cm)
