Keeping Iguanas Outside

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

In warmer parts of the United States and southern Europe, iguanas can be kept outside for a large part of the time. Even in colder countries, like England, iguanas enjoy being able to get outside and bask in natural sunlight on warm days. A sturdy, aviary-like structure with a wooden frame and wire mesh panels is probably the best and easiest to construct. The use of glass in outdoor enclosures should be restricted to small areas only, to prevent overheating or burning.

Lighting

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

A reliable thermostat will be needed to monitor the temperature and to prevent overheating. It is also a good idea to use a dimmer-type thermostat to control the basking lamp. All heating elements and bulbs must be protected so that the iguana cannot come into direct contact with the device.

Special fluorescent light tubes are now available that are designed specifically for iguanas. These lights are called full-spectrum lamps, and they not only emit a high-quality light that will display the iguana to its best, but they also produce invisible ultraviolet light. Iguanas, like many lizards, need access to UV-B light because this ultraviolet frequency is required for vitamin D3 synthesis. This is vital for the long-term health and well-being of your iguana. The tubes will need to be replaced approximately 12 to 14 hours a day.

The lamps must be placed in the correct position. The animal needs to bask close to the lamp to receive maximum benefit from the UV-B light, and, ideally, the tube should be placed 12 inches (30 cm) from the basking branch.

Living Together

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

As for the sex, two male iguanas rarely live together happily and will almost certainly fight in the mating season, particularly if one or more females is present. Groups of female animals will normally live together harmoniously. But even if females only are kept, they will still produce clutches of infertile eggs. Nesting sites must, therefore, be provided for all adult females to prevent problems with egg-binding.

Housing

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Ready-made cages are available in a range of different materials. Glass fish tanks are really only suitable for short-term housing of baby iguanas and they will soon require a proper wooden or melamine cage, or one of the increasingly common moulded plastic cages.

The size of the cage will depend on the size of your iguana. A young pair may be housed in a cage measuring 36 x 18 x 18 inches (90 x 45 x 45 cm) and this will be suitable for the first year to 18 months. If you choose a slightly larger cage (48 x 24 x 24 inches/120 x 60 x 60 cm), this will obviously serve longer as a home. These starter cages are available from your reptile store. Most are constructed from melamine and have sliding glass doors at the front. If your cage has no ventilation, remember to drill a few holes (not large enough for the animal to escape through!) for this purpose.

Selecting Your Iguana

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

You can buy green iguanas from many pet stores, where experienced staff should be on hand to give you advice. If they are not, find another store.

What to Look for

Look for an iguana that is lively and alert. Make sure that it is plump and its eyes are bright, clear, and round, with no discharge. Check carefully that it has all its digits, that its claws are unbroken, and that there are no ticks or mites. A young iguana should have a mischievous and inquisitive look and should occasionally flick its tongue as it moves around. Always try to choose an iguana that remains reasonably calm when picked up, because it will be easier to handle than a flighty or nervous animal. Iguanas store fat at the base of their tail, so this should be fat and rounded, with no bones visible.

Signs of a Healthy Iguana:

  • Body condition – must be plump
  • Tail – no sign of damage or wounds

Could I Look after an Iguana?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Think very carefully before taking on the responsibility of owning an iguana.

  • Can be left unattended for short periods if the owner is away
  • Can be kept in homes where asthmatics live, because the lack of fur, feathers, and their related dust makes them excellent pets for allergy sufferers.
  • If properly maintained, are not prone to illness and require less maintenance than a dog or cat.

Could I look after an Iguana?

This is the most important question that you should ask yourself before you buy an iguana. Your animal will ultimately need a large living area and will be relatively expensive to care for. It is very important not to take on a baby iguana if you are unable, or not prepared, to look after it for its entire life. Zoos and animal rescue centers are burdened with many iguanas whose owners simply cannot cope with them when they get too large.

Remember, a baby iguana may cost no more than $10 to purchase, but the equipment you will need to house and care for it properly may cost an additional $400.

With proper care, green iguanas can live 10 to 15 years in captivity. Over the last few years, much has been learned about the requirements of these animals and there have been great advances in equipment and products available for maintaining them. This is likely to prolong life expectancy.

Tick Prevention for your Iguana

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

The powder with a warm bath and several rinses and clean the cage thoroughly before reintroducing the specimen.

These two insect killers should be available through your pet dealer or veterinarian. A mixture of half-and-half castor oil and 90% grain alcohol brushed on the affected areas may also eliminate mites. Don’t dip your pet in this mixture; just apply a little locally. Note that 90% grain alcohol is not 90 proof. You can buy 90% grain neutral spirits in your pharmacy or liquor store. A little goes a long way.

If you pick off ticks and chiggers with the tweezers, you might well follow up with an alcohol swab to help reduce the risk of infection at the sore spot. Perhaps a pretreatment with the alcohol will tend to loosen the tick before you attempt to pick it off. This passage is not intended to scare anyone from keeping an iguana. People have had dogs and cats with chiggers, ticks, mites and fleas for all of the recorded history.

A number of large and small ticks attached under the edges of the scales of a rainbow boa. The ticks found on iguanas are usually similar in appearance to those found on snakes – ticks are not too choosy.

Defensive Mechanisms of Iganuas

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

An escape mechanism of the wily Iguana is that the tail can come off the animal in cases of extreme stress.  Many Iguanas when examined will be noted that they are missing tails or portions of tails.  From time to time it has occurred that accidentally owners of their pets have accidentally stepped on the tails of the brood, with the animal startled , leaving its tail behind and running off.

If cornered or trapped an Iganua may bite , leavinga very clean cut , or will use its tail almost as a whip, leaving a nasty welt.  Claws seem to be only for holding or grasping food or climbing not for personal defence.  Iganuas can be said to be “climbers by instinct”, meaning that they are more apt to go up than down.   This is not unlike cats who once having scaled a tall tree are unable to come down , and need assistance from perhaps a stranger or even the professionals  from the local fire depatrment.  Owners of Iganuas must be careful . If their pets bolt out an unlocked door they may quickly scale the nearest tree , never to be found again , and to freeze in colder climates and seasons.
