Sometimes eats other insects

AVERAGE LENGTH: 6 1/2 inches (16 cm)

NATIVE CLIMATE: Cool steppe, cool desert

NATURAL DISTRIBUTION: Southwestern U.S. and Northern Mexico

When antagonized this species of horned lizard is able to emit a fine stream of blood from its eyes; the blood can be projected up to 7 feet (2.1 m). This lizard can also puff out its body by filling itself with air. Such extreme defense mechanisms are necessary because the horned lizard, sometimes referred to as the “horned toad,” is a relatively small, non-aggressive lizard. The health of these lizards usually deteriorates quickly when the animals are kept in captivity due to difficult temperature and humidity.

Food Preferences of Adult Iganua Lizards

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

The juvenile Iguana is mainly insectivorous.  Its diet in captivity consists mainly of insects – such as mealworms and crickets.  Vegetables and fruits are often accepted as well.  Although the adult Iguana is mainly and generally a herbivore , it sometimes accepts poultry – chicken or turkey , fish and even beef.   Interestingly enough insects are rarely consumed by adult Iguanas.

It is a misconception that an Iguana can thrive on a diet of lettuce , tomatoes and mealworms.  To ensure that the Iguana’s appetite maintains sparked , it is most important that the lizard’s diet be changed , rotated and even diversified from day to day , week to week and month to month.   Many Iguanas have been observed to partake and even thrive on a wide variety of foods such as green , yellow and baked beans, collard greens; grated carrots, cabbage, melons, apples , bananas and of course the old standbys mealworms in the case of juvenile Iguanas.
