More accurately called horned lizards, there are fourteen species, which range all the way from British Columbia (Canada), throughout the western third of the U.S. to Central America. Some populations are protected as endangered species. They are diurnal.

You must provide a habitat that is dry, ranging from forest to scrub to desert. Horned toads remain small, reaching a maximum of 4 to 5 inches including tail. Feeding them can be a problem because they eat mainly ants, which most pet shops do not carry.

To prevent a lizard from going into a partial state of hibernation, which renders the reptile’s stomach unable to digest food properly, the night temperature probably should not drop any lower than 68 to 70 F (20-21 C).

Wind is probably rarely considered when deciding the possible environmental conditions in which to place an individual lizard specimen, and although the presence or absence of wind is probably not a crucial factor in successfully maintaining lizards, it seems appropriate that any environmental condition that can be duplicated in the captive habitat of any animal should be attempted.

Adequate air circulation certainly is necessary in any enclosed lizard habitat to prevent air stagnation, and in case of tropical rain-forest environments, to prevent the growth of molds and other fungi. An answer to the question of producing an air current within the lizard’s habitat might be the placement.

After 70 million years of terrestrial life, some reptiles returned to the sea. One group, the sauropterygians shown on these pages, retained many reptilian characteristics, although their bodies became more streamlined. All the sauropterygians developed hard rib “baskets” to support their abdomens and protect their vulnerable undersides from attack.

Prominent among the sauropterygians was an important group called plesiosaurs. One of these was Kronosaurus, a fast-diving predator with huge, fish-trapping jaws. Another was Cryptocleidus, which used its long, flexible neck for plucking victims from passing schools of fish. Placodus, was not a plesiosaur; it was a leisurely bottom feeder that ground crustaceans to bits with its mouthful of flat, crushing platelike teeth.

Aside from the typical saurian characteristics mentioned in the introduction, there are certain distinguishing though non-universal traits found in lizards. The subject of this section will be the various modifications found in certain organs of the lizards.

The first structure to discuss is the lacertilian eye. The eye of a lizard may be extremely well developed with functional lids and color perception, or the eyes might be concealed under a layer of skin, making them useless. The pupil could be elliptical or round. In the Gekkonidae, at least, many forms possess compound eyeballs. In the Chamaeleontidae the eyes are covered by a thick membrane of skin with a small aperture near the middle. Each eyeball can move independently of the other, a trait not wholly confined to the chameleons but found in a few other lizard genera as well (i.e., Calotes).

Clumsy object that it is, the shell has helped ensure the survival of the turtles for 175 million years. Today it is still worn by all species, although it has been modified to suit a variety of environments. Sea turtles, for example, have jettisoned much of their shell bone and are among the fastest-moving of modern reptiles. Land turtles have thinned theirs down to make tiptoe locomotion on their elephantine feet less ponderous. Soft-shelled turtles, which live in fresh water, have developed pancake-shaped shells with flexible edges which they use to help bury themselves. Lying hidden in shallow water, waiting for prey, they occasionally crane their long necks to breathe air with their snorkel-like nostrils.
