The Xenosauridae, or knob scaled lizards, are a small family of four species, three found in Mexico south to Guatamala and one, the Crocodile Lizard (Shinisaurus crocodilurus), found in southern China. They get their common name from the fact that their dorsal (back) region scales are heavily armored with rows of knoblike projections. These lizards occur in moist, semi moist as well as dry scrubland environments. The Chinese Crocodile Lizard is semiaquatic, entering the water to feed on fish and other aquatic organisms. These lizards may grow up to 16 inches in length, including the tail, and are relatively heavy bodied. They have sharp, fang-like, cutting teeth and can inflict a painful wound when they bite. Local Chinese myths say the Crocodile Lizard is venomous, which it isn’t, though its tiny red eyes lend credence to the belief.
All members of this family give birth to live young. They are rarely offered as pets and are subject to international treaties that regulate their trade. Captive-bred and -reared Crocodile Lizards are available from time to time, but their prices remain high.

After 70 million years of terrestrial life, some reptiles returned to the sea. One group, the sauropterygians shown on these pages, retained many reptilian characteristics, although their bodies became more streamlined. All the sauropterygians developed hard rib “baskets” to support their abdomens and protect their vulnerable undersides from attack.
Prominent among the sauropterygians was an important group called plesiosaurs. One of these was Kronosaurus, a fast-diving predator with huge, fish-trapping jaws. Another was Cryptocleidus, which used its long, flexible neck for plucking victims from passing schools of fish. Placodus, was not a plesiosaur; it was a leisurely bottom feeder that ground crustaceans to bits with its mouthful of flat, crushing platelike teeth.

Correct feeding is probably the most important aspect of keeping your iguana in good health, and is also the area in which most problems occur. Iguanas are herbivorous, that is, they eat plants; but they will also devour insects and small rodents in the wild.
Did you Know?
Their large size means adult iguanas have few natural predators, but they are the prey of large snakes, such as boas and anacondas. Baby iguanas are more vulnerable, being preyed on by turtles, large fish, and a variety of mammals and birds.

Leopard Gecko belong to the subfamily Eublapharinae of the large lizard gamilu Gekkonidae. Unlike other geckos , all members of this subfamily have movable eyelids , which is their most obvious characteristic. Eublepharine geckos also have digitals which lack the fine “brushes” or satae which enable many geckos to cling to glass or walls. However they possess well defined claws at the end of their digits which give them additional purchase when climbing rocks in the garden.
