To date, only one living lizard is known to be marine. This is the Galapagos marine iguana, Amblyrhynchus cristatus. Found most often on the rocky shores of its island home, this lizard will forage in the ocean for its meal of seaweed. This lizard is not a very good swimmer, merely adequate. It can reduce its heartbeat and other bodily functions, probably as an aid in adjusting to the two environments in which it lives.While Amblyrhynchus is unique in being marine, there exist many aquatic or semiaquatic lizards.

The Xenosauridae, or knob scaled lizards, are a small family of four species, three found in Mexico south to Guatamala and one, the Crocodile Lizard (Shinisaurus crocodilurus), found in southern China. They get their common name from the fact that their dorsal (back) region scales are heavily armored with rows of knoblike projections. These lizards occur in moist, semi moist as well as dry scrubland environments.The Chinese Crocodile Lizard is semiaquatic, entering the water to feed on fish and other aquatic organisms. These lizards may grow up to 16 inches in length, including the tail, and are relatively heavy bodied. They have sharp, fang-like, cutting teeth and can inflict a painful wound when they bite. Local Chinese myths say the Crocodile Lizard is venomous, which it isn’t, though its tiny red eyes lend credence to the belief.
All members of this family give birth to live young. They are rarely offered as pets and are subject to international treaties that regulate their trade. Captive-bred and -reared Crocodile Lizards are available from time to time, but their prices remain high.

Clumsy object that it is, the shell has helped ensure the survival of the turtles for 175 million years. Today it is still worn by all species, although it has been modified to suit a variety of environments. Sea turtles, for example, have jettisoned much of their shell bone and are among the fastest-moving of modern reptiles. Land turtles have thinned theirs down to make tiptoe locomotion on their elephantine feet less ponderous. Soft-shelled turtles, which live in fresh water, have developed pancake-shaped shells with flexible edges which they use to help bury themselves. Lying hidden in shallow water, waiting for prey, they occasionally crane their long necks to breathe air with their snorkel-like nostrils.

The conehead (Laemanctus Longipes) is an omnivore, consuming mass quantities of different types of food. Plants require approximately the same temperature and relative humidity factors as the tropical lizards that might share the environment. Two plants that require full sun are Coleus (flame nettle) and Musa (banana). Banana plants are attractive and appropriate when small, but if properly cared for these plants might outgrow the habitat.
Plants that are suitable for use in tropical lizard environments usually are cultivated for their lush foliage. Genera that require abundant indirect sunlight include Alloplectus, Alocasia, Caladium (angel’s wings), Calathea, Ctenanthe, Maranta (prayer plant), and Pellonia.
The pineapple plant (Ananas) can be grown from the fruit. The top section of the fruit, which contains the leaves, should be removed and potted after the bit of fruit remaining at the bottom of the cutting has dried for several days. The avocado (Persea) can be germinated in water. To do this, insert several toothpicks into the pit, place the pit in a glass or jar, and add water. The toothpicks are used to suspend the pit from the top of the container.
