Chinese Water Dragon

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

These grow up to lengths of 3 feet, these iguana look-alikes (they are not iguanids but actually agamids) are lively and growing in popularity. They live in trees and bushes and frequently enter ground water to cool off and/or escape predators. This lizard is capable of changing shades, becoming light green at higher temperatures (85 degrees F or above) and darker tans and browns at lower temperatures.

They require roomy cages at least 4 feet long, 2 feet wide and 3 feet high, densely planted with foliage and branches for them to climb. Substrate can range from sterile store-bought loam or sandy soils (with plants that do well in these kinds of soils or kept in pots external to substrata). A large pool of water, occupying as much as one-third of the ground area, should be provided. A small airpump powering an airstone should be placed in the water to increase ambient humidity and prevent stagnation. Like other lizards, Chinese Water Dragons are apt to foul their water with waste products, so the water should be cleaned and changed daily.

These lizards are omnivorous and readily accept both insects and vegetarian foods. They eat crickets, mealworms, waxworms, earthworms, guppies and goldfish (which can be placed in their pool) as well as fruit flies, moths and other bugs.

Your Pet Lizard: Brown Anole

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

If properly cared for, a single anole can live comfortably in a 5-gallon glass hooded aquarium; if more than one is going to be kept then you should allow about 5 gallons of aquarium capacity per animal. Two males will fight unless given fairly spacious surroundings to stake out their own territories. Store-bought (sterile) potting soil atop a layer of pebbles and potted or planted live vegetation can be included in their containers. Since anoles are arboreal, they should be provided with climbing branches or plants for sleeping as well as basking.

Ideal temperatures range between 70 degrees F at night to as high as 90 degrees F in the daytime. Anoles need at least eight hours of sunlight or full spectrum lighting daily. They ear a wide variety of small insects including small crickets, mealworms and fruit flies. Vitamin/mineral supplements can be sprinkled on the insects prior to feeding.

Key Factors in Choosing a Lizard

Friday, March 4th, 2011

  • How much space are you willing to devote to your lizard’s cage?
  • If you will have more than one lizard, do you have room to house them separately, if necessary?
  • Will you be willing to feed your lizard insects or rodents, or is a herbivore a better choice for you?
  • Will your children and other family members be willing to learn how to properly handle a delicate lizard?

Important Factors in Making Your Choice

Now that you’ve decided to get a lizard, which one should you choose and why? The first and foremost consideration, aside from price, is the size to which your lizard will grow and the space that it needs. If your space is limited, you should start off with a lizard you can comfortably accommodate in your own living quarters. Baby iguanas may be inexpensive, cute and seemingly easy to care for, but it is important to remember that, if properly nurtured, an iguana will grow rapidly, reaching maximum lengths, including the tail, of 5 feet or so. They need plenty of room, sunlight and special facilities. The larger monitor lizards also grow to relatively great lengths. They are spectacular animals and well worth the efforts, but you have to be realistic about what you can provide your new lizard. There are many lizards that can be adequately housed in aquarium tanks 3 feet long and 1 foot or so wide.

Another consideration is food. Vegetarian lizards can be accommodated by the fresh or frozen produce section of your supermarket. In a pinch, monitor lizards can be fed canned dog food and the same sorts of meats, and even some vegetable matter, that we eat. A lot of lizards are insectivores. They need to be fed live insects such as crickets, wingless fruit flies, mealworms (Flour Beetle larvae) and other bugs and worms, all of which are available in your local pet or bait shop, or by mail from live food suppliers.

What to Feed?

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Young iguanas may eat some insects, but adults are generally totally herbivorous. Live insects, such as crickets and mealworms, are readily available from all pet stores that sell reptiles (and many that don’t), and all of these are suitable for young iguanas. In the United Kingdom, locusts are also available.

Not all baby iguanas will eat insects, however, and they will thrive if fed exclusively on vegetable matter. The key to a good diet is variety, and it is very important not to let your iguana become fixated with one food item.

Iguana and Its Habitat

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Now Beebe was actively observing tropical animal life for forty years and this was the most intelligent iguana activity he was able to report. Draw your own conclusions.

Your pet can be expected to respond in ways you can measure to warmth, light, food, dogs, and water, but you will need a lot of patience and a sharp eye to spot many of these responses.

When in trouble, an iguana heads for a tree or for water. The ideal escape would be up a tree overhanging water, then to drop into the water, swim underwater and quietly come to the surface sometime later. If things get worse, and only as a last resort, the iguana can drop most of his tail. The discarded appendage will swish about for a while and perhaps distract the enemy while the reptile makes his escape. The tail stump will bleed a little then heal and slowly regenerate, but it will never be as nice as the original. There will be a scar line and the new tail will probably be solid black rather than black-banded green, and possibly it will not be as long as the original. C’est la vie!

Common iguanas are arboreal. They like to live in trees. They could spend their entire adult lives in trees, the females coming down once a year to dig burrows in a sandy hillside to lay eggs and the young remaining on land until they get too large or slow or hungry to subsist on just crickets and smaller reptiles. Your pet should be permitted to climb and perch and feel secure on a high window sill, valance or mantle piece. He can manage without the water under the perch if you provide a place to bathe or soak once in a while.

Longevity records for iguanas suggest that ten years for a common green iguana is not at all unusual. One pet kept in an apartment is known by the author to be over twelve years old. W. Michael Carey of the University of South Florida, Tampa, reported on two caged pets, one of which lived twelve years and five months; when it died it measured about 13 1/2 inches from snout to vent. Since the tail might be more than three fifths the total length, we could estimate a total length of perhaps four feet. Another captive lived ten years and five months; its snout-vent length (SVL) was about twelve inches.
