Lizards should be kept out of the bathroom, since toothbrushes and other personal hygiene articles could become contaminated. If you provide a perch near a window (be sure it is closed in winter and screened in summer), lizards such as iguanas will spend a good deal of their time basking and watching from such vantage points well off the ground. They may descend to defecate and to eat or lay eggs. Allowing your lizards free run of one or two rooms in your house also means giving them warm spots with human heating pads and basking lights or heating elements. Alternatively you need climate control, and you must keep the room warm enough for their needs. This is too warm enough for their needs. This is too warm for most people. Humans prefer temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s and feel uncomfortable at higher temperatures for prolonged periods. So unless you like is as hot as your lizards, this isn’t a workable alternative. Some lizard fanciers keep their animals in or near furnace rooms. If you do this, make sure the venting system is working properly, as any excess carbon monoxide from gas or oil burners can asphyxiate your lizard. Don’t use your lizard as the reptile equivalent of a miner’s canary. Have your heating system professionally serviced and checked regularly. Since the thermostat for a furnace is apt to be somewhere else in the house, such rooms frequently overheat or remain too cool, so you should check the temperatures over time if you decide on this option.
Finally, hazards must be removed. Large free roaming iguanas can shred and pull down curtains, knock over lamps and other household items and get tripped up in electrical wires. Whatever room you decide to let your large lizards roam in must be lizard-proofed.
- Although aquariums add beauty to your home, they may not be the best housing choice for your lizard. The glass of aquariums can block the beneficial rays of the sun and also intensify the heat. They can also be difficult to clean, especially if moisture accumulates in the substrate. This in turn may result in an unsanitary, and unpleasant living condition for your lizard. Never keep a true chameleon in an aquarium. When these lizards see their reflection in the aquarium glass , they think that they are seeing another chameleon, causing them great stress.
