Housing your Lizard

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

A variety of pre-built commercial enclosures, including aquarium tanks, Iguanariums, pre-built cages and other structures, can be used to house your lizard. The nature and size of the enclosure depends mainly on the nature and size of the lizard you have. Smaller lizards, ranging from a few inches to 2 feet in size, can be housed in pre-built all-glass aquariums of the appropriate size, fitted with screen covers and lighting fixtures. Some small burrowing lizards can be comfortably kept in sand-filled gallon jars with a minimum of other considerations. However, proper accommodation for most lizards involves more than four walls and a cover. The lizard keeper must also provide lighting, heating, substrate or flooring, plants, decorations and other cage furnishings, such as water bowls and hideboxes.

Reptilia

Plasmodium (Family Plasmodiidae Mesnil) has so far only been seen in lizards. Plasmodium minasense Carini and Rudolph from Mabuia agilis Radday, and Goniocephalus borneensis Schlegel (Laird, 1960) may serve as examples. Plasmodium vastator Laird has been in the flying lizard Draco volans Gray. The intermediate hosts of these parasites are as yet unknown.

Reichenow (1953) and Laird (1960) mention the further species of Plasmodium as occurring in reptilians:

Plasmodium agamae Wenyon in Agama agama L.;

P. diploglossi Arago and Neiva in Diploglossus fasciatus (Gray);

P. cnemidophori Carini in Cnemidophorus lemniscatus D;

P. mabuiae Wenyon in Mabuia quinquetaeniata Sternfield;
