American Chameleons or Anoles (Anolis sp.)

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

There are more than 150 species of anole lizard, including six species found in the United States. Only one of these, the Carolina or Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis; the American Chameleon), is native. The other five species of anole are introduced species, hitchhiking here on boats, in cargo or even by air. They arrived here from Central and South America and the West Indies, usually concealed in boxes of fruit, flowers or textiles.

Anoles are the perfect “starter” lizards and are especially recommended for the novice. They are inexpensive, require minimal housing and do well in captivity.

The bite of this species and other large lizards is painful, although not venomous, and could cause serious wounds. In captivity all the lizards I’ve mentioned can become docile and freely allow handling. If exposed to sunlight, however, a strange transformation takes place. The animal slowly regains its more aggressive instincts and may become vicious if an attempt is made to handle it. It has been reported by Ditmars that large monitors may charge and attack their regular keeper. The lizards inflate their lungs, give off ominous hissing noises, and lash at their victim with the long tail. The tail of a monitor can break the legs of a dog; a large one could probably knock over a man.

What Age?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

It is always best to start with a young animal, between three and six months old, which will acclimatize well to its new life in captivity. If you do want a larger animal, choose one that has been in captivity for a long time. Some pet stores take in animals that have grown too large for their previous owners, and, if you have the space, this is an excellent way of obtaining a sexable animal.

Could I Look after an Iguana?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Think very carefully before taking on the responsibility of owning an iguana.

  • Can be left unattended for short periods if the owner is away
  • Can be kept in homes where asthmatics live, because the lack of fur, feathers, and their related dust makes them excellent pets for allergy sufferers.
  • If properly maintained, are not prone to illness and require less maintenance than a dog or cat.

Could I look after an Iguana?

This is the most important question that you should ask yourself before you buy an iguana. Your animal will ultimately need a large living area and will be relatively expensive to care for. It is very important not to take on a baby iguana if you are unable, or not prepared, to look after it for its entire life. Zoos and animal rescue centers are burdened with many iguanas whose owners simply cannot cope with them when they get too large.

Remember, a baby iguana may cost no more than $10 to purchase, but the equipment you will need to house and care for it properly may cost an additional $400.

With proper care, green iguanas can live 10 to 15 years in captivity. Over the last few years, much has been learned about the requirements of these animals and there have been great advances in equipment and products available for maintaining them. This is likely to prolong life expectancy.

Introducing Iguanas

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Up to two-thirds of an iguana’s length is taken up by the tail, which, interestingly, can be shed as a defensive mechanism if the iguana is attacked. This behavior is rarely seen in captivity, but care should be taken with young iguanas because they may react like this if grabbed by the tail. The tail, incidentally, does grow back, but will never be as attractive as the original.

The green or common iguana is a reptile and therefore is considered cold-blooded. The proper term for this is ectothermic, which means the animal derives its body heat from its surroundings, rather than producing heat internally as mammals do. This makes reptiles very efficient because they do not have to waste energy producing heat. Much of the food eaten by mammals goes into producing the energy.

Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis)

Monday, April 5th, 2010

FAMILY: Iguanidae

LIFESTYLE: Arboreal; forest-oriented

DIET: Insectivorous

AVERAGE LENGTH: 7 inches (18 cm)

NATIVE CLIMATE: Subtropical and savannah

NATURAL DISTRIBUTION: Southeastern United States

Often sold under the mistaken identity of “American chameleon,” this anole is possibly the most widely known and most frequently purchased species of lizard in the United States. It is abundant in its native area and is therefore a relatively inexpensive lizard.

These lizards are capable of rapid color changes and are able to exhibit many shades of green and brown. The green anole is equipped with toe pads that enable it to climb vertically on glass walls. The male of the species is endowed with a red to orange dewlap that it often displays during territorial disputes and mating rituals.

Although readily available and relatively inexpensive, this iguanid usually lives only a short time in captivity – two years of terrarium life might be considered the maximum for many specimens.

A trio of green anoles (Arioks carolinensis). The anole in the center is molting— note how dull his shedding skin is when compared with the bright green hides of his companions.

AVERAGE LENGTH: 6 1/2 inches (16 cm)

NATIVE CLIMATE: Cool steppe, cool desert

NATURAL DISTRIBUTION: Southwestern U.S. and Northern Mexico

When antagonized this species of horned lizard is able to emit a fine stream of blood from its eyes; the blood can be projected up to 7 feet (2.1 m). This lizard can also puff out its body by filling itself with air. Such extreme defense mechanisms are necessary because the horned lizard, sometimes referred to as the “horned toad,” is a relatively small, non-aggressive lizard. The health of these lizards usually deteriorates quickly when the animals are kept in captivity due to difficult temperature and humidity.

The Iguanas Motile Movements

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Movement of the lizard’s head with the dewlap fully extended. With its mouth half open, the Iguana emits a hissing sound that seems to originate from deep within its oral cavity. To convey yet further hostility the lizard moves its tail slowly back and forth, resembling the movement of a snake and suggesting the idea that it is about to strike out with this weaponry. Although lacking prehensile capabilities in its tail, the iguana is endowed with voluntary control over the movement of almost the entire length of its tail. This last threatening display can be more than mere show. An adult iguana can induce pain with a forceful snap of its tail. The iguana has many small

Teeth. When the iguana bites, it sometimes clamps its jaws shut and shakes its head back and forth, similar to a dog tugging on a towel when playing with its master. Judging from the fierce behavior that the irate iguana exhibits, it might seem that its proficiency in the art of self- defense would render it invulnerable to many predators. The truth, however, is that an iguana probably would be defeated in a conflict with any but the smallest of

Warm-blooded animals. An unusual and sometimes

Exasperating behavior that appears to be unrelated to the iguana’s display of aggression is this lizard’s ability to emit a spray of a salty liquid from its nostrils. This spray may be inadvertently directed onto the iguana keeper’s face when feeding or otherwise tending to the lizard.

In captivity the iguana is a territorial reptile. A male specimen does not allow intruders of the same sex within his boundaries. If two adult males are forced to co exist, one probably will become dominant and harass the passive lizard with frequent hissing and biting. An iguana defending its territory sometimes rams the trespasser with its snout and bites on impact.

It is reasonably safe to assume that a male and female of similar size can be kept as a pair without incident. The females of the species appear to be more passive, which suggests that two or more females might feasibly be housed safely within the same residence. Collectively housing as many as a dozen hatch-lings harmoniously is possible.
