Amniote egg: An egg which contains the embryo in a fluid-filled cavity during development. Such a mechanism is found only in reptiles, birds, and mammals. The membrane which envelopes the cavity is called the amnion.

Arches: Skeletal bridges found in the skull. These arches underlie the region for which they are named. Absent in lizards is the arch formed by the jugal and quadrate bones. This feature is present in the similar tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) of New Zealand. The arch most typically found in lizards is the temporal arch, formed from the squamosal and postorbital bones.

Atlas: The first vertebral segment, articulating directly to the skull at the occipital condyle.

Axis: The second vertebral segment, which is responsible for the movement of the skull.

Columella cranii: Also known as epipterygoid bone, a rodlike pair of thin shafts found on either side of the braincase.

Crepuscular: Active by dusk or dawn.

Diurnal: Active by day.

Fossorial: Being by nature a burrowing animal.

Homeostasis: The metabolic balancing of bodily functions to a normal state of operation. For example, maintenance of body temperature, water retention, etc.

Jacobson’s organ: A paired sensory mechanism found in the roof of the mouth in certain reptiles. Air particles from outside are brought by the tongue to this organ for analysis. It is essentially an extension of the sense of smell.

Lateral fold: The long margin along the body of certain lizards whose skin contains osteoderms, such as Ophisaurus and Gerrhosaurus. The fold region is devoid of osteoderms, allowing bodily growth.

Helodermatidae

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Eyelids well developed. Ear exposed. Limbs well developed, pentadactyl, bearing strong claws. Head blunt. The body is stocky and bulky, the tail thick and short. Osteoderms are present. The lower teeth are grooved and venom glands are located in the posterior section of the lower jaw. The scales are non-overlapping, looking like Indian beadwork. The two species are oviparous and are confined to Arizona and western coastal Mexico. These are the only venomous lizards.

The exact nature of the venom is not well known. It is apparently neurotoxic, causing paralysis, but a lethal dosage has not been universally agreed upon. Human fatalities have been few and were probably not attributable solely to the lizard, as the victims were usually well intoxicated by alcohol. In at least one death the nature of the victim, being juvenile, probably didn’t help.

Choosing a Pet Lizard

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

You have to decide whether to set up a live bug larder for your lizard (especially if you buy bugs via mail-order – the minimum cricket order is 1000!) or stop at the pet shop three or four times a week to buy smaller quantities of live foods. So the next questions you need to ask anyone selling you a lizard (after “how big does it get?”) is “what does it eat?” and “how can I find that food conveniently and rapidly?” Unlike snakes, which can be offered a mouse once  a week or every two weeks, most lizards need to eat every day or every other day.

The following section is a rough guide to the most commonly found lizards available for hobbyists. It is by no means complete, but gives a thumbnail sketch including maximum size, housing and heating needs and feeding requirements.

Selecting Your Iguana

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

You can buy green iguanas from many pet stores, where experienced staff should be on hand to give you advice. If they are not, find another store.

What to Look for

Look for an iguana that is lively and alert. Make sure that it is plump and its eyes are bright, clear, and round, with no discharge. Check carefully that it has all its digits, that its claws are unbroken, and that there are no ticks or mites. A young iguana should have a mischievous and inquisitive look and should occasionally flick its tongue as it moves around. Always try to choose an iguana that remains reasonably calm when picked up, because it will be easier to handle than a flighty or nervous animal. Iguanas store fat at the base of their tail, so this should be fat and rounded, with no bones visible.

Signs of a Healthy Iguana:

  • Body condition – must be plump
  • Tail – no sign of damage or wounds

Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis)

Monday, April 5th, 2010

FAMILY: Iguanidae

LIFESTYLE: Arboreal; forest-oriented

DIET: Insectivorous

AVERAGE LENGTH: 7 inches (18 cm)

NATIVE CLIMATE: Subtropical and savannah

NATURAL DISTRIBUTION: Southeastern United States

Often sold under the mistaken identity of “American chameleon,” this anole is possibly the most widely known and most frequently purchased species of lizard in the United States. It is abundant in its native area and is therefore a relatively inexpensive lizard.

These lizards are capable of rapid color changes and are able to exhibit many shades of green and brown. The green anole is equipped with toe pads that enable it to climb vertically on glass walls. The male of the species is endowed with a red to orange dewlap that it often displays during territorial disputes and mating rituals.

Although readily available and relatively inexpensive, this iguanid usually lives only a short time in captivity – two years of terrarium life might be considered the maximum for many specimens.

A trio of green anoles (Arioks carolinensis). The anole in the center is molting— note how dull his shedding skin is when compared with the bright green hides of his companions.

Sometimes eats other insects

AVERAGE LENGTH: 6 1/2 inches (16 cm)

NATIVE CLIMATE: Cool steppe, cool desert

NATURAL DISTRIBUTION: Southwestern U.S. and Northern Mexico

When antagonized this species of horned lizard is able to emit a fine stream of blood from its eyes; the blood can be projected up to 7 feet (2.1 m). This lizard can also puff out its body by filling itself with air. Such extreme defense mechanisms are necessary because the horned lizard, sometimes referred to as the “horned toad,” is a relatively small, non-aggressive lizard. The health of these lizards usually deteriorates quickly when the animals are kept in captivity due to difficult temperature and humidity.

Iguana’s Structure

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The forelimbs are supported from the pectoral girdle. The humerus bone articulates at a point between the sternum and inter scapula. Similarly, the femur fits into an opening of the ischium. At the lowest point of the pectoral girdle is the sternum, a bone which protects a good part or the internal organs. Between the sternum and the pelvis may be a bony or cartilaginous union of the ribs, known as the parasternum. Extending from beneath the scapula and uniting with the sternum is the clavicle, a bone always present in pairs.
