Against the rough bark of the tree on the opposite page a gecko is almost invisible – a striking illustration of how the skin colors of many lizards match their backgrounds. Others can go even further, enhancing the effectiveness of their scaly and irregular shapes by means of dark-brown pigment cells which turn the skin lighter or darker as needed. Chameleons can even change color from gray to brown and green, and sometimes even yellow, in response to various stimuli. The East African chameleon seen above demonstrates its reaction to the changes in heat and light produced by a shadow; others show various hues from night to day, or when angered or alarmed. Lizards are the acknowledged masters of such color-changing. Some snakes have the ability, but use it only rarely and in a minor way.

Although not venomous, there are certain other lizards that can be a lot to reckon with if disturbed. The monitor lizards, genus Varanus, include the largest living lizards. The true giants, such as the Komodo dragon, Perentie, or water monitor, could easily dispatch a man. The teeth, claws, and weight of these lizards would make them a formidable bunch of adversaries. Indeed some, like the Komodo dragon, rule supreme in their native haunts.
While not overtly aggressive, even the moderately large monitors will turn on a potential threat. The smaller species of Varanus, as well as Tupinambis and Dracaena, could cause severe wounds and are reportedly capable of removing a finger. While not poisonous as such, a bite from one of these creatures could be quite serious. The large size and bad temper of the Komodo dragon make it unsuitable for handling, even if it were still legal to own them.

The name beaded lizard is a good one, for the non-overlapping scales resemble Indian bead work. The eyes are small and lidded; the ear is externally visible. The tongue is dark and frequently flicked like that of a snake.
The cheek area of these species will appear swollen, as it is here that the poison glands lie. Unlike snakes, the injection mechanism is located in the lower jaw. The poison flows into the lizard’s mouth and seeps into the wound caused by the long teeth. Although the teeth are grooved, they do not effectively conduct the venom flow. Because the actual injection of venom is uncertain, the lizard must hold on to the victim to increase the possibility of injection, instead of simply striking like most poisonous snakes.
While these lizards are generally believed to be slow and lethargic, a Heloderma can turn quite rapidly and secure a good hold on anyone foolish enough to disturb one.

While few teiids are able to run far bipedally, they nevertheless represent some of the fleetest-footed lizards known. The American Cnemidophorus has earned the well deserved name of “racerunner.” Even the large tegus can hustle when necessary. One that I have kept for some time can leap a good six feet, reaching a table top from the floor while a few feet away. I have seen some Tupinambis moving on their hindlimbs with the forebody held off the ground, but they were not running – I think a more descriptive term would be “staggering.” Nevertheless, they were surefooted and well balanced. Almost all teiids will consume both animal and plant matter.

The October 2006 all-venomous issue was awesome. I immediately read the gaboon viper article. Good stuff. Not many people know that the late Marlin Perkins was bitten by a gaboon viper in 1928 (according to Reptile Life, vol.1, issue 6). Only one fang penetrated his index finger. At the time, there wasn’t any gaboon viper antivenom in existence. He received four doses of antivenom: two rattlesnake, one cobra and one fer-de-lance. He experienced hemotoxic and neurotoxic symptoms: pain, difficulty breathing, extreme swelling of his arm, bloody urine and loss of consciousness. Mr.Perkins almost died, but pulled through and stayed hospitalized about 25 days.
At the time he was the curator of the St. Louis Zoo’s reptile house and was treating the snake that bit him for parasites. As curator, he surely had a lot of experience and respect for his charges, and he still got bit.

AB 2862, the bill originally meant to put California pet store management into criminal code, was amended to be referred to the state Department of Consumer Affairs.
The amended billed easily passed both the state Assembly and the state Senate, but the governor reportedly vetoed AB 2862 due to funding issues.
PIJAC’s lobbyist, Kevin Pedrotti, indicated that he “suspected” a veto might result because the governor had signed a number of animal bills that did not include funding anywhere near where it would cost to put into effect regulations called for by AB 2862.

Iguana bites are not common, but iguanas certainly can bite if provoked. Fortunately, iguanas give plenty of warning when they are not happy, usually in the form of hissing and tail whipping. Failure to notice such warnings could have a bad outcome. While a baby or young iguana bite will be merely a painful nip, a bite from an adult iguana will be far more serious and may result in the need for stitches. Read the warning signs and this situation should never arise.
Scratches are by far the most common injury from pet iguanas. Keep in mind that iguanas are arboreal lizards, and, as such, their claws are long and sharp to help them climb. If they become startled, they will cling on wherever they are. If this happens to be your arm, you may get some nasty scratches. Trimming the claws will reduce scratching.

Up to two-thirds of an iguana’s length is taken up by the tail, which, interestingly, can be shed as a defensive mechanism if the iguana is attacked. This behavior is rarely seen in captivity, but care should be taken with young iguanas because they may react like this if grabbed by the tail. The tail, incidentally, does grow back, but will never be as attractive as the original.
The green or common iguana is a reptile and therefore is considered cold-blooded. The proper term for this is ectothermic, which means the animal derives its body heat from its surroundings, rather than producing heat internally as mammals do. This makes reptiles very efficient because they do not have to waste energy producing heat. Much of the food eaten by mammals goes into producing the energy.

Iguanas should not be considered domesticated in the way that cats and dogs are – they are wild animals. They are interesting to keep, but I would hesitate to call them pets in the true sense of the word. They are very similar to fish in this respect. Having said that, many iguana owners do develop a close relationship with their animals, letting them roam freely in the house or taking them out in the yard for exercise and access to sunlight. A range of custom leashes for this purpose is now available from reptile shops.
Iguanas make good pets for children and should encourage responsible pet ownership. They will not, however, interact with other family pets and should not be left alone with domestic pets, such as cats and dogs, which will make them feel threatened. Neither should they be kept with other reptile species whose needs would probably be different.
Most iguanas are imported and may, understandably, be nervous at first. This is even more apparent when buying a newly imported adult. Such animals will need time to settle into their new surroundings before they can be handled or let out of the cage.
On the plus side, iguanas:
- Are relatively undemanding
- Do not need to be taken for walks
Some owners develop a close relationship with their iguanas.

A subtropical climate is, as the name implies, somewhat less than tropical. Although winters in these zones are much milder than those of temperate regions, frost is a possibility and extreme low temperatures can occasionally drop to —5°F(—21°C). Normally, winter day temperatures average from 55 to 60°F (13—16°C), while night temperatures average from 35 to 45°F (2—8°C).
Summer months usually average from 75 to 80°F’ (24— 27°C) during the day, and nighttime lows are ordinarily in the high 50s to the low 70s F (15—22°C). Extreme daytime highs can reach 110°F (43°C). Average summer humidity is approximately 70% to 80%. Average annual precipitation is 30 to 65 inches (76—165 cm).
Almost all of the southeastern United States below the border of Virginia and North Carolina is encompassed by a subtropical climate. This subtropical zone, like the temperate zone of the United States, reaches west to approximately 100°W longitude (extreme southern Florida is excluded from this climatic zone). Most of the West Coast of the United States has a subtropical climate, and much of southern Europe is subject to a subtropical clime that is prove to be the ideal temperatures for most temperate and subtropical species.
