Lanthanotus

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

This acts in the same manner that a snake would, only slower. It is also a fossorial form, having been found underground as often as in water. These lizards are nocturnal beasts, but even then they move very little. Although the eyelids are functional, the lizard almost always elects to view his world through the spectacle in the lower eyelid. The tail appears segmented and is somewhat prehensile; whether or not Lanthanotus climbs is unknown. The color is reddish brown above, while below it is mottled pale orange and yellow.

Ophisaurus Ventralis

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Ophisaurus Ventralis, the common glass lizard of the eastern United States, is often bright green in color. There are many limbless forms in this family, including Anguis and Ophisaurus. Ophiodes is a New World limbless form, while the Caribbean Wetmorena has very small, thin limbs.

The alligator lizards, genus Gerrhonotus, have prehensile tails to facilitate climbing. These lizards make excellent pets and can be induced to stand on their hind legs and “beg” as a pet dog would. The galliwasps of the genus Diploglossus may be nearly two feet long. These stocky, skink-like lizards are nearly identical to the smaller Wetmorena, but while the former is pentadactyl, the latter is tetradactyl. The diminutive Sauresia sepsoides is another closely allied form.

The glass “snakes” of the Ophisaurus group have the widest distribution. There are four of five varieties in the United States, one in Europe and Russia, and one in China. The little Ophiodes are similar but have flap-like hind limbs; as these are essentially useless, I refer to the genus above as “limbless.”

A Super Swallower

A sure way around the problem of subduing live flesh is to catch it young enough. The two-foot African snake Dasypeltis scaber, shown here, has carried this solution to the ultimate point of eating nothing but bird’s eggs, and has become marvelously specialized for this task. Its teeth have dwindled to nubbins which are useful only for gripping a smooth egg. Its jaws are loosely connected to its skull by two swiveling bones which can be dropped down to give Dasypeltis the most stretchy mouth of any snake. In its throat are sharp projections sticking down from the backbone and used to rip open eggshells.

The Organic Systems of Reptiles

Friday, August 12th, 2011

The liver and the heart, we owe to the kindness of Dr. W. Frank, Stuttgart, the picture of a large lizard (Iguana iguana) with excessive deposits of cholesterol in the walls of the large blood vessels. The same author provided the picture of the heart of a gavial which suffered from severe gout. This animal died when the heart was entirely encrusted with deposits of uric acid.

Diseases of the sexual system concern particularly the eggs (Hunt’s (1957) egg-necrosis) or the ovary). Klingelhoffer (1955) mentions the dangerous situation which arises when the process of oviposition is disturbed. This condition affects many captive reptilians, particularly tortoises and chameleons, and is probably due to a combination of causes. At the time of writing any attempt at treatment seems to be as dangerous as the condition itself.

Of the sensory organs the eye disease of terrapins is by far the most commonly seen. Since there have been no reports on this disease in wild animals it must be due to factors connected with captivity. Infection of the excretory ducts of the Harderian gland is the most likely cause, but it remains difficult to explain why in one and the same cage some of the specimens should contract the disease and other not.

The Fierce Alligator

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Its respiratory system is better. The nostrils are separated from the mouth by a hard palate. When the alligator swallows a struggling victim there is no danger that a desperate kick will penetrate the roof of its mouth and damage its brain. The alligator has well-developed lungs in comparison to the more primitive saclike structure of snakes. It has the most highly developed brain of any reptile, and is one of the few to have its teeth firmly set in its jaws.

On the other hand, the alligator lacks a well-developed Jacobson’s organ, which means that its ability to detect tastes and odors is not nearly so acute as a snake’s. It has the well-developed digestive system which works so efficiently for all reptiles, but lacks a bladder, although most turtles and lizards have one. Its ammoniac kidney wastes, along with intestinal wastes, pass through a chamber called the cloaca which opens to the outside of the body.

The Agile Snakes

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

All 2,700 kinds of snakes tend to look alike – long, squirmy and legless. But despite this superficial resemblance, they show just as much variability of form as their ancestors the lizards do. They range in size from the five inches of a burrowing snake no thicker than a goose quill to the 30 feet of an Asian python over 300 pounds in weight. And with these variations go others – environmental adaptations such as the prehensile tails of many of the arboreal snakes, or skin colors and patterns that match or blend with the surroundings. The amazing thing about snakes is that being legless has not proven a hindrance to locomotion, but an enhancement, making them extremely agile. Some snakes can even outdistance a man in brush or over rough ground.  The eyelash viper, a poisonous snake of Central America, can wind its prehensile tail several times around a branch and grab at birds with its open mouth while dangling in the air.

The Dexterous Lizards

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

There are about 3,000 species and subspecies of lizards, and though they differ in many ways, they have one habit in common – all shed their skins. Adults molt once every month or so, during the months in which they are active, and unlike snakes, most do not shuffle off their epidermis in one piece, but in patches or even a scale at a time. The banded gecko below rips off its old skin with its mouth and swallows the strips. And to peel its feet, it yanks at each digit as though removing a tight glove.

The Komodo Monitors of Indonesia, the largest, heaviest lizards. grow to 10 feet and weigh up to 300 pounds. They occasionally catch small deer or pigs and can swallow them whole.

Days of Doomed Grandeur

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

Emerging from streams and ponds some 365 million years ago, the reptile ancestors established a beachhead during the Upper Devonian and eventually gave rise to myriad bizarre creatures, from gopher-sized cotylosaurs to the schooner-sized Brontosaurus. While many returned to the water, a few took to the air. But most remained on land to dominate the earth for some 200 million years.

The Tegu aka Tupinambis Teguixin

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

The bite of this species and other large lizards is painful, although not venomous, and could cause serious wounds. In captivity all the lizards I’ve mentioned can become docile and freely allow handling. If exposed to sunlight, however, a strange transformation takes place. The animal slowly regains its more aggressive instincts and may become vicious if an attempt is made to handle it. It has been reported by Ditmars that large monitors may charge and attack their regular keeper. The lizards inflate their lungs, give off ominous hissing noises, and lash at their victim with the long tail. The tail of a monitor can break the legs of a dog; a large one could probably knock over a man.
