No student of the history life on earth will deny that the coming of the reptiles was one of the great events. As the first truly terrestrial vertebrates, the early reptiles not only filled out the faunal picture for their own time in arresting ways, but they also set the stage for later dramatic happenings like the rise of the dinosaurs, the beginnings of birds and the age-long evolution of the mammal line.

The reptiles went ashore during the Permian, more than 250 million years ago. There was growing opportunity in the Permian land, and by a surprising twist of history, the reptile ancestors had already evolved equipment to take advantage of the opportunity and become the first terrestrial pioneers. During the time of the coal forests, land vegetation had become well developed. Ferns, seed ferns and their kin covered the low-lying land, the energy of the sun was being caught by chlorophyll, insects had made their appearance and food was wasting on the shore. It was almost certainly the insects as a source of animal food that attracted the reptile ancestors living harassed lives at the rim of the land. If one had to work out this bit of paleontology by logic, one would probably do it this way: the insects were there, vertebrate life was under competitive and predatory pressure in the sea, so some of the shallow-water vertebrates, seeking food and refuge ashore, gradually acquired legs, lungs, scales and the shelled egg, and thus developed at last into land reptiles which were able to forage for insects in the forest.

The iguana is smart. He selects his food to provide a balanced diet. If this is what you believe – great! The iguana is stupid, but providentially he is endowed with a very tolerant digestive system. Perhaps this is what you believe – great!

Here are a few facts about your iguana which might be useful regardless of which statement you believe. Young iguanas in the wild are known to eat insects, small animals, birds, other reptiles, land snails, fruit, vegetables, flowers and buds. Adult wild iguanas have been found with some animal food in their stomachs. Other adults have been known to thrive in the wild on a 100% vegetarian diet.

Iguanas are rarely seen to drink, but they do like to bathe and swim and soak; perhaps they do drink or absorb moisture through their skin. The Galapagos land iguana eats or licks plants wet with dew and also seems to drink sea water.

Iguanas consume some gravel which they use in their alimentary canals to aid in breaking up tough vegetable matter. One fine specimen of common iguana contributed to the Staten Island Zoo in New York was reported to have thrived on mozzarella cheese and ice cream. At the zoo it thrived on the regular iguana diet.

Another, a pet in Washington, D.C., ate vegetables for twelve years and is thriving. This specimen has a special fondness for frozen spinach souffle, served piping hot! He is known to drink water from time to time. His owner believes that the preference for vegetables over fruit may have been acquired since vegetables were all he got to eat when he was a baby twelve years ago.

Overall a balanced as well as varied diet should be an achievable goal if the time and patience required are expended . To be sure and ensure that the Iguana is receiving adequete nutrition, a suitable vitamin and mineral supplement might be added to its food via an eyedropper on a regular and ongoing basis , paying particular attention to correct doseage. A vitamin and mineral supplement formulated especially for lizards should be available at pet stores that sell reptiles.

The iguana can be fed by hand, but the consistency of many foods render the use of a feeding bowl more appropriate much of the time. The bowl should be large enough to allow the Iguana relatively easy access tot he food. A constant food source should be available to the lizard, realizing that the animal is inclined to be a forager by nature. This suggests that its digestive system would be better served if the lizard were to ingest small amounts of food throughout the day time periods rather than being compelled to consume all of the nourishment that requires in one meal and one sitting.
