Feeding & Care – continued

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Iguanas can generally be fed by hand, but the consistency as well as consistencies of many foods will render the use of a feeding bowl more appropriate much if not most of the time.  A constant food source should be available to the lizard, realizing that the animal is inclined by its nature , to be a forager.  This suggests that its digestive system would be better served if the lizard were to ingest several smaller amounts of food thought the day rather than be compelled to consume all of the nourishment that it requires in one meal or one so called “sitting” or the animal.

The Iguana drinks water more than often , often at least 2 to three times a day.  Low humidity in the Iguana’s surroundings will most likely if not probably make itself evident and apparent by the lizard’s increased intake of water and other fluids.  Thus spraying water on the leaves of plants in the Iguana’s terrarium as a means of attempting to furnish an adequate supply of water for the lizard will fall short of the intended goal.  The Iguana should always be provided with a water bowl that should be thoroughly cleaned and refilled daily and on a daily care basis.  The habitat might include and additional container of water with which to soak its entire body and tail.

A hatching Iguana which measures close to 8 inches ( 20 cm) in length can usually be expected to grow approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches ( 2.44 – 3.8 cm) per month for the first year or two.  After the second year, the rate of growth declines to an average of much less than 1 inch  ( 2.5 cm) each month.  A fully grown Iguana might reach a maximum length of around 6 1/2 feet ( 203 cm) although 5 feet ( 152 cm) is probably more typical of the size attained by many species during a lifespan that probably ranges ten 2 to 25 years.

Food Preferences of Adult Iganua Lizards

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

The juvenile Iguana is mainly insectivorous.  Its diet in captivity consists mainly of insects – such as mealworms and crickets.  Vegetables and fruits are often accepted as well.  Although the adult Iguana is mainly and generally a herbivore , it sometimes accepts poultry – chicken or turkey , fish and even beef.   Interestingly enough insects are rarely consumed by adult Iguanas.

It is a misconception that an Iguana can thrive on a diet of lettuce , tomatoes and mealworms.  To ensure that the Iguana’s appetite maintains sparked , it is most important that the lizard’s diet be changed , rotated and even diversified from day to day , week to week and month to month.   Many Iguanas have been observed to partake and even thrive on a wide variety of foods such as green , yellow and baked beans, collard greens; grated carrots, cabbage, melons, apples , bananas and of course the old standbys mealworms in the case of juvenile Iguanas.

Iganuas – Vary Their Feeding Habits

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

It is a misconception and misinformation that Iguanas can thrive on a diet of lettuce , tomatoes and mealworms only and solely.   To ensure that the Iguanas  appetite remains alive and “sparked”. it is most important as well as essentially vital that the lizard’s menu be varied and rotated from day to day , week to week and even month to month.  You may like to eat at a favorite restaurant or even drink beer or buy beer at a beer store or vendor yet for you not to vary your menu or food intake on a regular basis would be a most vital as well as major mistake.    It can be said by reptile authorities in the field that Iguanas have been observed to prefer many varied forms and types of foods.  Among that observed include – green , yellow , kidney and baked beans.  Collard greens that include:  grated carrots. cabbage, melons , apples , bananas, mealworms  ( of juvenile Iguanas especially) ,  even cheese , cheeses and bread.  Canned fruits and vegetables may be fed to the animals – but only after a thorough washing prior to feedings.

The individuals dietary preferences  of Iguana lizards and reptiles can be said to vary.  The favorite food of one specimen might be an item that is not preferred or relished by another.   Foods that can be said to be acceptable to some Iguanas include :   fresh spinach , lima beans , peas , cucumbers, broccoli  as well as broccoli leaves , sweet green peppers ,tomatoes ,celery as well as celery leaves, red radishes , lettuce , apricots ( be careful of the cyanide in the pits) , peaches , pears ,chicken , turkey and  ohter waterfowl , tuna , salmon fish, walleye fish ,  and flowers of the forsynthia shrubs.

It can be said that the Iguana can be and is rarely observed to eat fruits that contain large amounts of citric acid .  These include lemons , limes, oranges and grapefruits.

It can best be said that the foods represented in these tables and descriptions represent only the starting point from which to start to when trying to determine the foods that will be most eagerly accepted.  A balanced diet as well as varied diet should be a most achievable goal if the time as well as patience required are expended.  To ensure that that the Iguana is receiving adequate nutrition , a suitable vitamin and mineral supplement may well be required.   This can easily be administered on a regular basis, paying careful attention to the correct dosage and dosages.  A vitamin and mineral supplement formulated especially for lizards should available at local pet stores especially at  reptiles and more.
