Iguanas can generally be fed by hand, but the consistency as well as consistencies of many foods will render the use of a feeding bowl more appropriate much if not most of the time. A constant food source should be available to the lizard, realizing that the animal is inclined by its nature , to be a forager. This suggests that its digestive system would be better served if the lizard were to ingest several smaller amounts of food thought the day rather than be compelled to consume all of the nourishment that it requires in one meal or one so called “sitting” or the animal.
The Iguana drinks water more than often , often at least 2 to three times a day. Low humidity in the Iguana’s surroundings will most likely if not probably make itself evident and apparent by the lizard’s increased intake of water and other fluids. Thus spraying water on the leaves of plants in the Iguana’s terrarium as a means of attempting to furnish an adequate supply of water for the lizard will fall short of the intended goal. The Iguana should always be provided with a water bowl that should be thoroughly cleaned and refilled daily and on a daily care basis. The habitat might include and additional container of water with which to soak its entire body and tail.
A hatching Iguana which measures close to 8 inches ( 20 cm) in length can usually be expected to grow approximately 1 to 1 1/2 inches ( 2.44 – 3.8 cm) per month for the first year or two. After the second year, the rate of growth declines to an average of much less than 1 inch ( 2.5 cm) each month. A fully grown Iguana might reach a maximum length of around 6 1/2 feet ( 203 cm) although 5 feet ( 152 cm) is probably more typical of the size attained by many species during a lifespan that probably ranges ten 2 to 25 years.
