African Fat-Tailed Geckos

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

The African fat-tailed Gecko is the second most widely kept and propagated eublepharamine gecko.  Unlike leopard geckos in the herpotological trade which are primarily captive-bred. the majority of fat-tailed Geckos are imported into the the United States , North America and Europe out of the West African – West Africa geographic regions.

 African Fat Tailed Geckos

Many of these animals that are imported as such are stressed , dehydrated. parasitized , disease and require careful examination and acclimation over time.  A more than significant percentage die or succumb as a result or due to illness and/ or improper care over the time span of their ardous journey from their breeding areas.  However once acclimated and if maintained under proper conditions . fat tailed Geckos are nearly as hardy as Leopard Geckos.  A velvety appearence combined with rich subtle coloration , large dark eyes and a docile personality make this species of Geckos one of the best picks for gecko enthusiasts.

Sexing Gecko Lizards

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

The scientific name of the Leopard Gecko is Eublepharis macularis  – EU= good/true /blephar  eyelid macularus= spotted.  It can be said that Leopard Geckos are also sold under the name of Indian or Pakastani fat tailed Geckos.  Leopard Geckos should not be confused with the dwarf bent toed Geckos  (Cyrtodactylus peguensis)  also marketed in recent years under the name of Leopard Geckos by some animail or reptile distributors.  It is always best practice to check and verify the scientific name or names with animal or reptile curators. Generally Leopard Geckos themeslves are more costly and expensive to purchase in the pet and reptile trades than the dwarf toed versions.

Interms of sexing the two – there is a slight sexual dimorphism between males and females.  Males are somewhat more heavy bodied with a slightly broader head and thicker neck than females.  The only reliable method is to look at the underside of the animals,  Males have a “v’ shaped row of pre-anal pores which exude a waxy type secretion or secretions .  Another obvious feature of is a presence of hemipenile swellings at the base of the tail .  In contrast females have pre-anal pits rather than actual pores.  Juveniles  at least one month old can be sexed with some reliability by checking the development of pre-anal pores ( in contrast to the barely hinted pits of female hatchlings) under a 10 X magnifying glass.

Anguindidae

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Anguindidae

The purely American Annielidae , consists of two species.   Mainly subterranean in habits , it is known to be found near moisture, in loose soil such as beaches.  Unlike the Dibamidael,  Anniella has functional eyes and well developed eyelids.

The Anguindidae have their share of burrowers too , such as the well known slow-worm,  Anguis fragilis , a worm eating species found in Britain and in continental Europe.  They are remarkably long lived for lizards, being kept in capitivity for over 50 years. and most effective erradicators of the garden “slug”.

Unique to the continent of Australia and New Guinea is a family known as “scaly-footed lizards” and Pyrogodidae.  These are characterized by being limbless save for a pair of flaps near the vent.  They lack eyelids and the ear may be exposed or hidden.

limbless lizards

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Fossorial

To this group belong most of the limbless lizards.  The creatures discussed here those tht live underground , all or most of the time.  Typically ,, these lizards  are specalized by having cylindrical bodies, pointed snouts, reduced eyes and the external ear absent.  The nostril is usually set horizontally, as opposed to facing upwards as in most lizard species.  The head shields are usually enlarged.

Thise families whose members are fossorial are the Diblamidae , Anniedllidae , some Scincidae and some Pyglophodidae .  The earless monitor Lanthanorus , may be fossorial or at least semi-fossorial.  The genus Dibamus contains six diminutive species found in Southeast Asia.  The largest may be eight inches long.  The body is very thin, and the lizards of this group  remain rare in collections because of their secretive habits.  Also in this group is the Mexican Anelytytropsts papillosus , a lizard which has been collected about ten times.  It is found in the desert, as opposed to the forests of Asia , and is probably wholly fossorial.

Tropical Rain Forest Climate

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Tropical Rain Forest Climate

A tropical rain forest climate is also known as a “wet tropical climate””. This implies that the area tends to receive large amounts of rainfall. Many regions of tropical rainforest lack a dry season or at most only two months of the year are dry. Average annual precipitation is 70 to over 100 inches ( 180 – 250 cm). Temperatures remain consistently high and there is no winter season. The mean annual temperature is 77 to 81 degrees F. ( 25 to 27 degrees) . Daytime high temperatures range from 95 degrees F ( 30 degrees celsius) to the low 90’s ( 32 to 34 degrees celsius)

The highest temperature measured at Santarem , Brazil along the Amazon River in the Amazon Basin of South America was 85 degrees farenheit; this is just slightly below the usual tropical forest nightime low of 68 – 75 degrees farenheight ( 20 to 24 degrees celsius). Average humidity can be estimated at approximately 85 % and above. Tropical rainforest climates are located primarily within a range of 10 degrees lattitudes poleward in both directions of the equator.

Regions of the world that are influenced by the presence of a tropical rainforest climate include: most of the eastern half of Central America , part of the Northwestern coastline of South America from 15 degrees S latititude to 10 degrees North ( this includes the Amazon Basin ) , the Congo Basin of Africa, a small section on the eastern coast of Africa, eastern Madagascar , all of Malaya , almost all of the Indonesian islands including Sumatra; New guinea, the eastern Phillipines, and parts of Southwest Asia.

Tropical mantis are undoubtedly the most adapted and camouflaged insects of their class and hunting skills. Many tropical species display interesting behaviours. Many topical species are renowned for their exotic colors , appearance and their abilities to mold and blend into the local fauna and flora waiting for their predatory mantis kill.

Crests

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

With the popularity of science fiction being what it is today , few people have not seen a  “Lost Island”  type picture where bold scientists and their parties encounter the “last surviving” dinosaur”.  One fact pervades all the grand attempts of the cinema to depict a dinosaur:  all dinosaurs have to have crests , frills or spines.  The lizards and crocodillians used in these movies are almost always adorned with fancy make-up.

But among the vast arrays of living lizards, few of the large ones possess such fancy accouterments, while many small forms are more bizarre than anything that “Hollywood” could ever perceive in the movies.  Admittedly , there are but a few large forms like Hydrosaurus, which would fit the bill nicely, but they are exceptional.

Considered to be fairly plain lizards, the genus Anolis has members with a developed caudal sail. while males of the genus as a whole are known for their great throat fans.  The true chameleons have great diversity in their facial horns. as do the great lizards of the genus Harpesaurus .  Ceratophora has a single horn-like flap on the tip of its snout, while Lyriocephalus has a small globe on theirs.

Juvenile Iganua

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

The juvenile iguana is mainly insectivorous. Its diet in captivity consists chiefly of mealworms , crickets and grasshoppers as well as other assorted garden pest insects.

It is a misconception that iguanas can thrive on a diet only of vegtables – lettuce tomatoes etc. Mealworms and other insects should be added to the diet. To ensure that the iguana’s diet remains sparked it is essential that the menu and feedings be diversified from day to day.

The individual mantis’s dietary preferences vary from mantis to mantis. The favorite food of one mantis might be unpalatable to another subject.
